The method of inhalation used with a vape is largely determined by individual preference of the user but this decision can be influenced by the suitability of different vaping products to a given inhalation method.
MtL Vs. DtL Vaping: Which Method Is Right?
Mouth-to-lung, or “MtL” as it’s known, is a vaping inhalation method in which the vaper draws vapor first into their mouth and then into their lungs. This is how smokers usually inhale smoke, first into their mouths and then into their lungs. This approach can prove to be more pleasant for those looking for a smoother draw.
Direct-to-lung, or “DtL,” is a vaping technique in which vapers draw vapor directly into their lungs without first drawing it into their mouths. This method provides shorter and more intense sessions than MtL vaping. It’s also better suited to high VG e-liquids and the devices that best support them.
The Difference Between MtL & DtL Vapes
Vape juices with high levels of vegetable glycerin (VG) typically have at least 70% VG, giving them a VG to PG ratio of 70% to 30%. High VG liquids are best suited to particular types of vaping devices, which include sub-ohm vapes, box mods, RTAs, drippers, and squonk mods. If you want quick sessions with a high level of intensity, meaning lots of vapor delivered to you quickly, then you want a DtL vape.
For former smokers that are switching to e-cigs, a mouth-to-lung vape may provide an easier transition. The reason for this is that most smokers use the mouth-to-lung inhalation technique when smoking and are likely to use a similar technique when they first start vaping. For this reason, an MtL vape may be the most suitable place to start for new vapers that are quitting smoking.
How To Inhale A Vape, Properly
The proper way to inhale a vape is to use either the mouth-to-lung or direct-to-lung vaping method.
To use the mouth-to-lung technique, follow these simple steps:
- Turn your vaping device on and ensure that it is ready for use.
- Press your mouth against the mouthpiece
- Hit the fire button or simply begin drawing vapor into your mouth if you are using a draw-activated device that senses when it’s in use.
- Inhale the vapor into your lungs once you have a comfortable amount in your mouth.
- Exhale.
To use the direct-to-lung vaping technique, follow these steps instead:
- Turn your vape on.
- Press the mouthpiece against your lips.
- Inhale vapor from your device directly into your lungs.
- Exhale.
You may notice that the only difference between MtL and DtL vaping is the lack of the act of first drawing vapor into your mouth before inhaling it. Otherwise, the two methods are the same. Regardless of how insignificant this step may seem, you will find that the difference in the two methods is significant, or at least it certainly feels significant.
